The ‘Ber’ Months: Making Time for Cosy Self-Care

There’s something about the arrival of the ‘ber’ months that makes me want to slow down. September, October, November and December seem to arrive with their own kind of energy. The evenings start drawing in, there’s a little more chill in the air and suddenly being wrapped up in a blanket with a good book feels much more appealing than rushing around.

Although, in our house, these months aren't necessarily quiet! Alongside the usual run-up to Christmas, we have three birthdays squeezed into this part of the year too. Add school activities, work, Christmas planning, presents, shopping, family commitments and all the other little things that seem to appear as the year draws to a close, and it can feel like there is always something to organise, somewhere to be or something that needs doing.

And while I absolutely love this time of year, it can also be a busy one.

Finding the cosy amongst the chaos

This is probably why I've come to appreciate those little pockets of quiet even more. For me, self-care doesn't necessarily mean booking an expensive treatment, going away for the weekend or having a perfectly planned wellness routine. Sometimes it's much, much simpler.

My favourite kind of self-care is a cosy night at home with a good book, lots of blankets and nowhere that we need to be.

The children have started enjoying the same kind of thing too, which I love. There is something really lovely about us all being at home together, each of us curled up with a book, quietly enjoying our own little bit of time. No rushing around, no screens demanding our attention and no need to be productive. Just being at home.

Those evenings have become some of my favourite moments.

Making time for you

I think self-care can sometimes become another thing we feel we should be doing. Another appointment to make, another habit to build, another box to tick. But perhaps it doesn't have to be complicated.

Maybe self-care is putting your phone away for half an hour and reading a few chapters of a book you've been meaning to pick up. Maybe it's having a bath, going for a walk, sitting quietly with a cup of tea or getting into bed a little earlier than usual.

Or maybe it's simply putting a blanket over your knees, getting comfortable and giving yourself permission to do absolutely nothing productive for a while.

Because rest doesn't need to be earned.

Before the Christmas rush begins…

As Christmas gets closer, it's very easy to put ourselves at the bottom of the list. We'll just get this done first. We'll sort that out first. We'll get through this week and then we'll have some time for ourselves.

But there will always be something else to do.

So perhaps this year we can start making those little pockets of time for ourselves before the Christmas rush really begins. It doesn't have to be a whole day. It could be ten minutes with a cup of tea, half an hour with a book, an evening without your phone or a quiet Sunday afternoon at home.

Small moments of calm can make such a difference when life feels full.

The season naturally invites us to slow down

There is something about this time of year that makes slowing down feel a little more natural. The darker evenings encourage us indoors, the colder weather brings out the blankets and cosy socks, and the idea of curling up with a book suddenly feels like exactly what we need.

It's a lovely reminder that we don't always have to be doing.

Sometimes we can just be.

And sound has become another part of that for me. I love creating spaces where people don't have to achieve anything. They can simply lie down, close their eyes, breathe and listen.

There's something very powerful about giving yourself permission to stop for an hour, especially when life outside the room is busy.

What does self-care look like for you?

As we move through these cosy months, perhaps it's worth thinking about what genuinely makes you feel rested. Not what self-care is supposed to look like, and not what somebody else does, but what actually works for you.

What makes your shoulders drop? What helps you breathe a little deeper? What makes you feel like yourself again?

For me, it's books, blankets, cosy evenings at home and seeing my children happily doing exactly the same. It's those simple moments that remind me that self-care doesn't always need to be big or complicated.

Sometimes it's just about making a little space for yourself amongst everything else.

So here's to the ‘ber’ months: the darker evenings, warm drinks, books waiting on the bedside table, blankets, birthdays, the excitement of Christmas and all the beautiful chaos that comes with this time of year.

But amongst all of that, I hope you can find some quiet moments too.

A little time to slow down.

A little time to breathe.

And a little time that belongs just to you.
